Driver distraction is the leading cause of serious and fatal traffic collisions in the United States. By some estimates, nearly half of all collisions involve some form of driver distraction. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and is a great time to resolve to avoid distraction while driving as we head into the summer travel months.

Safety advocates continue to preach the message but there is concern that drivers have grown weary of listening to it. There is little evidence that the risks of distraction are decreasing. On the contrary, the growing prevalence of in-car technologies, and the increasing capabilities of the smart phone, have only combined to increase the risks.

Spring Brings High Tide for Tourist Injuries in Southwest Florida

A record number of people are descending upon Southwest Florida this month, as the winter tourist season reaches high tide.

Sarasota Magazine reports COVID has done nothing to stop people from across the country and around the world from visiting Florida. Overall in 2021, Florida had nearly 118 million domestic visitors, the highest number in state history. Of that 118 million, 1.5 million were overseas travelers—an increase of 43 percent compared to the third quarter of 2021.

Last month, the Governor’s Office reports visitors continue to surpass pre-pandemic levels.

“While tourism in other states is only just beginning to recover, Florida is at the front of the pack — now we are surpassing pre-pandemic levels and setting new visitation records,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

High Risk of Spring Break Injuries Amid Record Crowds

Early reports indicate it is going to be a record-breaking year for Spring Break visitors in Southwest Florida.

The Miami Herald reports throngs of beach goers are already challenging safety personnel; a weekend shooting that sent three to the hospital is the latest warning of the risks when large groups of young people gather to let off steam.

What many see as the end of COVID restrictions, after two years of quarantines, is adding to the volatile mix this year. While Southwest Florida is known as the “quiet coast,” we are also expecting to see a record number of teenagers and young adults on our beaches and at our resorts through Easter weekend.

Shooting Highlights Risks of Assault, Firearm Injuries

Fort Myers police are investigating a weekend shooting at a local apartment building.

The incident occurred in the 2800-block of Grand Avenue in Fort Myers. A 22-year-old man is charged with aggravated battery, according to FOX 4 News. All parties have been accounted for and authorities say there is no threat to the public.

A victim did suffer non-life-threatening injuries. FMPD is calling this an active investigation. Aggressive Drivers Targeted in Cape Coral

An enforcement blitz against aggressive drivers in Cape Coral last week, resulted in 67 traffic stops on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cape Coral Police Department conducted the grant-funded traffic saturation operation specifically targeting aggressive driving. Saturation patrols flood an area with officers, who are then able to stop motorists for infractions that might otherwise go unchecked.

The fact that more than 60 motorists were stopped during a 5-hour period on an otherwise lazy Wednesday afternoon in Southwest Florida, highlights the risks our car accidents in Fort Myers and Cape Coral know all too well: Aggressive drivers are a danger to innocent motorists on the road.
